Weltweite Proteste unter dem Schlagwort „Divestment“ haben zu einem klimafreundlicheren Umgang mit Finanzen geführt – insbesondere an Hochschulen. Nicht so in Österreich, unsere Hochschulen stehen immer noch in (in)direkter Verbindung bzw. finanzieller Abhängigkeit von umweltschädlichen Praktiken. Divestment means investing funds so that they do not go to fossil fuel projects or do not invest with banks that support fossil fuel or climate-damaging projects.

Worldwide protests under the catchword „divestment“ have led to a more climate-friendly approach to finances – especially at universities. Not so in Austria, our universities are still (in)directly linked to or financially dependent on environmentally harmful practices. How can the special situation for Austria be explained? What are the hurdles and how could they be overcome through targeted activism? The lecture gives detailed insight into the socio-ecological responsibility of Austria’s universities using the example of divestment.
